RE: St Marks Close cycle way

A pretty awful tactic by the mad locals dropping drawing pins.
You can post a comment here, it looks like the locals have revealed themselves on the comments board! http://www.worcesternews.co.uk/news/4225868.Puncture_warning_on_disputed_cycle_path/

According to notices posted out there a Mr Thomas of Woodpecker Lodge, Barneshall Avenue has requested a stile! Perhaps writing to him asking why he discriminates against pushchair users, cyclists and people with mobility problems might help. Is he one of the vandals?

Well the council replaced the signage that was stolen/removed/vandalised, call it what ever you want, last week. Suprise suprise it has again been stolen in the last couple of days. We as council tax payers will have to foot the bill for this. Complaints should be addressed to the police and the relevant council dept.

This IS an act of vandalism the very thing the protestors of the use of the cycleway are citing as a problem with the path.

   ACT NOW OR LOSE IT

I don't think the residents have any influence on the public footpath or what ever it is. It is the road itself they are signposting. I believe the signs are incorrect - it is a private street with a public right of way along it.
I've used that route for 23 years now, I don't remember there ever being a stile on the footpath bit in that time.
Ignore the signs and keep using it. Don't antagonise the natives - most of them are quite happy for cyclists to use the route, and want it widened and surfaced better to make it easier for them to use it. It's only 2 or 3 short sighted residents with nothing better to do than waste public money fighting the cycelway plans.
Might be worthwhile writing to your local councillor in support of the cycleway though.
Happy Christmas, sorry I'll miss the boxing day 10 - I'll be somewhere a bit warmer

Much as I think said locals are mounting a ridiculous campaign, it should be recalled that the route is, according to the newspapers, presently a pedestrian walkway and cycling along it is not permitted so one is required by law to dismount unless and until the council changes its designation.

In any event, I think it would be unwise to provoke the locals and probably counterproductive, so I'd suggest we let them blow themselves out and lobby for the cycling route by legitimate means.

I have plenty of timber and some sheets of ply to make up some signs for cyclists.

How many of the people who live there ride bikes or is that to clean and healthy for them ( i bet they all own a car or two).I know i can't say a lot about the CARBON FOOTPRINT with the beast of a car i drive but at least i try to offset it by cycling.

All club members should condescend on Barneshall avenue on XMAS day or maybe incorporate it in the Boxing day 10 could be fun.                 Most people have a problem with boy racers revving engines tooting horns wheel spinning loud music etc etc etc. so a few people ride through there does a bit of gear shifting or the odd ring ring of a bell upset them that much.residents get a life.

Worth adding comments to this.

Dont let the wild locals stop you cycling through here. The Barneshall Avenue is a Private Street. The locals dont know the difference between a Private Street (with public rights) and a Private Road (no public rights).

I see the route signs have been half inched by the locals again.

Hi everyone please read this to see if you can assist.

Dear CTC Member,
The CTC locally is supporting County Council and Sustrans plans to improve this footpath (see attachments) and get it formally recognised as a cycle path. This will significantly improve the route as a quick and safe way into and out of the City Centre from Bath Road and St Peter's.
There is however strong opposition from a limited number of local residents who want to see the route permanently closed to all cyclists.
If you want to support the opening up of this important link in the local cycle network there are three things you can do:
1. e-mail or send a letter of support to scheme@worcestershire.gov.uk or Paul Cooper, Sustainable Schemes Team, Sustainable Transport, Environmental Services, Worcestershire County Council, Spetchley Road, Worcester, WR5 2NP.
2. Send a note to the above to confirm that you have been cycled along this route (don't worry its not a criminal offence so no action can be taken against you). This is important as the CTC lobbied to get the law changed 3 years ago so that routes that have been used by cyclists for many years and where that use has not been challenged can be officially designated as a bridleway. Its better if you can confirm that you have used it for over 20 years, but if your use is more recent it still helps to establish the extent of use.
You could use something like:
As a local resident I ........(your name).........of .........(address)........confirm that I have cycled the footpath between Barneshall Avenue and St. Mark's Close without being challenged and approximately x times per week/month/year for the last x years.
It helps if you can actually make this more specific e.g. since I moved to (your address) in 1986 or I used it regularly as a route to work, the pub, Tesco, school etc
3. Copy this e-mail on to your friends and neighbours and ask them to wirte in too.
Unfortunately the official deadline for consultation ends this Friday 14th November so a prompt response would be appreciated. If you can't respond by then, don't worry it is still helpful to send in your support afterwards and specifically if you can confirm that you have used the route as a cycle path.
A copy to me at lyndon.bracewell@btinternet.com would also be appreciated.
Yours in Cycling
Lyndon Bracewell
