RE: 66" gear event

This calculator is pretty good, has a cadences guide as well:
(needs Java installed)

My 700c wheels roll out at about 26.5 inch diam, rather than the traditional 27, roughly the same as the CTT guidelines.

I'll go fixed as it saves me bolting a rear brake on etc, I can always take my feet off the pedals down hill!!

The charts are i definetly a guide! On sprints You can use 43*17 depending on tub height. But the race is normally a honesty one.
I have never seen a bike check to make sure that your gear changers are screwed down, Sprayed measure markers, etc. If you want single speed then. Go free not fixed

Gear tables are only a guide.
You can only guarantee the 'inches' by wheeling the bike one pedal stroke and measuring the distance covered (as is done at track meets)
The reason is that the profile of tyres differs.
A high profile tyre will give a longer distance per pedal stroke than a low profile tyre.
If anyone is fussy you could bring a tape measure along.
I suggest that the spirit of the event is to be 'about right'

I think that you will be fine with that. Last year I rode 42/17 which according to the table in the ctt book gives 65.6 but on some other tables 66. something?

From memory I beleive as long as your gear is smaller than 67 you are ok.

I'll ask Sam at the old hills tt the week before so that we know for sure.

Are you thinking of riding it fixed? I did consider it as my fixed bike has shorter cranks so I should be able to spin faster on it... Although I think the time you will lose on the downhills would be impossible to make up.

I would like to enter the 66" gear event in a couple of weeks.
how strict is that ruling?
The reason being, I can use 50 x 20 with 23mm tyres which according to the BC chart is 66.4"
Will that be close enough?
what are others using?
