RE: fixed gear time trial gearing

I've been riding a fixed all winter you don't half get through some brake pads going hell for leather down a bank and braking at the same time...................Also easing off as you go over a bit of bad road, you can't,it's a shock at first i can tell you.
Been using 48 x 18 ,tried a 20 for our low gear but didn't use it in the end.I had a 19 on for ages which i think is ideal for training anywhere though not too lumpy. i have an 18 on it now which is better. It's all trial and error you need to try to use it on the coarse, some use them for opens and it's growing in popularity perhaps we should have a fixed wheel award i think the sevale have one.

Cheers for the advice Vince, I might have to make do with 86.8 for the moment as that's the biggest gear I can get (45/14). I've been for a little test along the A38 for a few miles and it felt ok, a bit low with a tail wind and a bit high with a head wind! I'm racing the penny farthing tomorrow in a duathlon at Castle Combe, so will experiment more next week, cheers Dave..

Dave
I rode the Norton 10 on 90", which i found fine on the flat but struggled up Pirton bank. I wouldn't think you should go below 88" unless you like spinning it.weirdface
Iuse 90" on the track too by the way, although 86" is good just for training.

Good lucksmile

Hi all, The fixed gear bug is starting to take a hold of me! To go along with the penny farthing I now have the loan of my first fixed bike, cheers Mark. I'm thinking I may have a go at a few 10s on it to get used to it before I go to the track. Anyone got any suggestions on gearing for any of the courses coming up soon? I suppose it's just a case of get it close and go up or down a bit depending on the rider. Anyway a sensible starting point would be great, Cheers Dave P.
